Guru Ravidass Jayanti

Guru Ravidass Jayanti is the birthday of Guru Ravidass, celebrated on Magh Purnima, the full moon day in the month of Magh month. On the day there is a Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji read and there is a special aarti and a Nagar Kirtan procession bearing the guru's portrait are taken out to the accompaniment of music through the streets of the temple locality. Also devotees take holy dip in the river to perform rites. In the bhawans, his image is worshiped. Every year, a grand celebration at Shri Guru Ravidass Janam Asthan Mandir, Seer Goverdhanpur, Varanasi takes place to mark the occasion along with lakhs of devotees who came from all over the world to celebrate the occasion. The preachings of Guru Ravidass are formed in 'Shabds' Similar to verses from a bible for example, which are part of the Shri Guru Granth Sahib, of which 40 shabds are those directly of Shri Guru Ravidass Ji. However this comprises part of a whole book and it cannot be read alone but rather in context with all the other Gurus, shabds and statements to understand the religion and its teachings in full. Attempts have been made to extract the 40 shabds and place them into an individual book by one of the more well known priests, who was assassinated not so long ago. This attempt to create this book was called the amrit bani which is not a clear reflection of the religion overall as it only seems to consider certain verses with exclusion to others. As it is very clear that the sign for the Ravidassia community is 'Har' which refers to 'ALL' and all encompasses every guru and all their teachings and verses. The religion has prospered and has become more and more established over the decades, specifically the last 2/4 decades. The 2016 date for this holiday is February 22
