In Christianity there is a calendar known as calendar of saints which associates each day with one or more saints and refers to the feast day of said saint. The calendar associates December Six to Saint Nicholas. He is remembered by Catholic and Orthodox Christians for his contribution towards Christianity. He was a man of faith who lived his life in devotion to Christ.
Saint Nicholas was a fourth century bishop of the city of Myra in what is now Turkey. He is known for his great kindness and his generous aid to those in distress. Saint Nicholas is very famous amongst sailors, merchants, archers, thieves, children, and students in various countries. He was the only son of wealthy Christian parents. He was very religious from an early age and used to observe fasts on Wednesdays and Fridays. His wealthy parents died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young and he was raised by his uncle. His influence turned the young Nicholas as a reader, and later as a priest.
On Saint Nicholas Day bishop of the church may lead a town parade. In addition to that he may worship him. He may also visit schools, hospitals and homes or provide the focus for a party. The most interesting thing which he would do is to come under cover of night to leave sweet treats and small gifts for children. These gifts are placed in children shoes. The reason behind this action is that Saint Nicholas loved children. Saint Nicholas gifts are meant to be shared. Parties may be held on the eve.
Saint Nicholas is the main gift giver. His personality is very similar to Satna Clause who comes at the time of Christmas. Saint Nicholas reminds us that giving is more important than receiving, and doing for others is the faithful way to live. He believed this would provide help to the needy people. Saint Nicholas adds festivity to the atmosphere before Christmas.
